How much does Twiggli cost?
Twiggli is completely free! You can print your tree out at home with no additional costs. A full size tree will spread over 8 sheets of A4. Alternatively you can send your tree to a local or online printing company for professional printing. A typical printing company will probably charge from £10-15 per print, depending on the paper and finish required.
What is a GEDCOM file?
A GEDCOM is a special form of plain text file holding information about the individuals in your family tree. The name comes from the expression ‘Genealogical Data Communication’. Different types of information, such as names, birth dates, places, and occupations, are identified by particular tags. Genealogical software either uses the standard set of tags, or a standard set extended with a few proprietary extensions (or extras). This means that for the most part you can import and export your data between different software packages and websites. The GEDCOM does not contain photos as it is a text file. The current version is GEDCOM 5.5, which was released in 1996. Some software uses a subsequent version, GEDCOM Draft 5.5.1. Twiggli is compatible with both versions.
Can I make a Twiggli tree manually if I don’t have a GEDCOM?
Sorry, I don’t offer the option to create trees manually. In the meantime there are lots of websites and software for building a family tree, and just about all of these allow you to export your data as a GEDCOM file whenever you want.
How do I download my GEDCOM from Ancestry?
- Log in to your Ancestry account and go to the Trees tab.
- Select your tree.
- When you’re in the tree, click the arrow beside the tree name and select Tree Settings.
- Scroll down the page until you can see the secion title ‘Manage your tree’. Under this is a green button, ‘Export tree’. Click this to generate a GEDCOM file.
- When the file is ready a new button, ‘Download your GEDCOM file’, will appear.
- Save this to your computer in the usual way.
How do I export a GEDCOM in Roots Magic?
- Open the database containing the information you want to export.
- Choose ‘File, Export’ from the main menu.
- In the GEDCOM Export dialog, choose ‘Everyone’.
- Under the Data to export column untick everything.
- Under Privacy Options column untick everything.
- Under Privacy Options in the dropdowns select ‘Full Name’ and ‘Full Date and Place’.
- Click OK to continue to the Save As dialog.
- In the Save As dialog, enter the filename you want to name the GEDCOM file.
- Choose the folder in which you want to save the file.
- Click OK to create the GEDCOM file.
How do I export a GEDCOM in Family Tree Maker?
- Open a family file and go to the File menu.
- Select Copy/Export Family File.
- Under Save as Type, select GEDCOM, and choose the folder where you want to save the GEDCOM file.
- You do not need to export only part of your FTM file as a GEDCOM file.
- You do not need to select which individuals you want to include.
How do I export a GEDCOM in Family Historian?
- Click File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File.
- In Destination choose Standard GEDCOM.
- In Format choose UTF-8.
- Click Add All.
- In the Exclude panel tick: Private Notes, One-Member Family Records, and Unconnected Records. The remainder should not be ticked.
- In Media Records select Exclude.
- In Same Sex select Strict GEDCOM Format.
- Click OK.
How do I export a GEDCOM in Heredis?
- Choose File > Export > GEDCOM File.
- You do not need to add submitter information.
- Tick ‘Use Gregorian Dates’.
- Choose the character set. I recommend UTF-8.
- You do not need to tick anything in the Data to be Exported box, e.g. ‘Media’.
- Include all people with full names. (Only Mac users have this option).
- In Branch Options select Ancestors & Descendants. (Only Windows users have this option).
- Check that the primary person displayed is the one you want to use in Twiggli.
- Choose the maximum number of generations of ancestors.
- You do not need any collaterals.
- If any of your direct ancestors are Confidential Persons you will need to include them.
- Do not exclude Persons Born Less Than … Years Ago.
- Click Export, name the file and choose where it should be saved.
How do I export a GEDCOM in Mac Family Tree?
- Click Publish, and select GEDCOM File.
- Choose Export all persons
- Choose UTF-8 and Unix options
- Choose to Export information marked as private and Export all person details.
- Choose Export all persons
- Choose the date format you want (Gedcom Standard will capitalise everything).
- Choose Do not export for all the optional extras.
- Click Export GEDCOM File.
Some users may experience 500 errors on Twiggli when uploading this type of GEDCOM file. The easiest workaround is to follow the steps above then upload your Gedcom to another provider e.g. Ancestry, and download it back again. It should then be useable in Twiggli. My apologies for any inconvenience.
What size is a Twiggli pdf poster?
Twiggli posters are A1 sized. You can scale your PDF to print at any size, but if you make it bigger, the resolution won’t be as good, and if you make it smaller, it will be harder to see the smaller elements. A1 is is a common international standard (ISO 216), measuring 594 x 841 mm, or 23.4 x 33.1 inches. The majority of printers worldwide should be able to set their software to print this size. The closest US standard size is D (559 × 864 mm), but beware, the ratio is not the same. Many printers offer 24″ x 36″ prints. This is a little larger than A1, so when ordering you should tell your printer whether to keep a white border around the edge, or trim your print to size.
What is the file size of a Twiggli poster?
Your complete PDF file is likely to be between 60 and 65mb.
How many generations can I display?
Twiggli is designed to display six generations, which will include 63 individuals. This is a good goal for the amateur genealogist. It will probably take you back to the early 1800s and perhaps a little earlier.
What are the ticks and batteries for?
The colours of the batteries help you to see which ancestors you need to work on. You do not need to make all the batteries green in order to print your tree. When you first upload a GEDCOM all the batteries will be red. When you edit an ancestor and tick and save some boxes the battery will turn orange. When you have ticked and saved all the boxes the battery will turn green. Using the batteries is a really useful way to mark ancestors you want to research further before printing.
Do I need an account to use Twiggli?
Yes. As soon as you want to save your work or print a tree you will need to register. This allows the website to email you when your tree is ready, and store your completed family trees.
Can I use my own photos?
Yes, you can! Photographs can be uploaded for individual ancestors, and automatically resized in Twiggli. You can also upload your own background photograph. An ideal background image should be at least 2401 x 1701 pixels (landscape).
My screen has frozen / is stuck!

I can’t upload a gedcom – I get an error message
Sorry about that. I have tested Twiggli with lots of different GEDCOM uploads but you seem to have struck on a problem I didn’t anticipate. The easiest workaround is to upload your Gedcom to another provider e.g. Ancestry, and download it back again. It should then be useable in Twiggli. My apologies for any inconvenience.
My recent changes in Ancestry don’t show up on Twiggli
Ancestry may have delivered a cached (old) data file. Either wait for a while and try downloading your GEDCOM again, or go incognito and try again. If these methods don’t work, try clearing your cache. You can check the file with a text viewer (I use EditPlus) to verify whether your new data is there.
I’ve uploaded my GEDCOM. Why can’t I see my photos?
The gedcom is a text file, and there are no photos in it. You will need to upload your photos to Twiggli separately.
