These amazing glass plate negatives were discovered by Bob Thomson and his son Roy in a potting shed in the 1980s.
Where can the photos be seen?
- On the above video from Bob Thomson.
- A CD of the John Wood Collection, containing a collection of 100 photographs of Coldingham and surrounding area taken between 1890 and 1910, can be consulted at the Archive of the Borders Family History Society.
- I understand that all the photos were on a computer in the Luckenbooth in Coldingham in 2018.
- Many of the photos have been published in “Old Coldingham and St Abbs” by Lawson Wood.
- I believe the originals may still be held by Bob and Mary Thomson in Coldingham.
The photographs are out of copyright, but the digital images may have different rights asociated with them. I have been unable to find out how to get permission to use images from the collection, but I have seen them published elsewhere. I would be grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction.
John Wood was one of my great-great grandfather’s brothers. My gg-grandfather came from Scotland to the US in the 1880s and settled in the southwest part of Missouri. Many years ago I had been in touch with Bob as he had been trying to research the family history of John Wood. We were able to help each other out. He was very nice and enthusiastic over our emails. Thank you for your article.
I have a john wood print 465/1000 what do I have
Sorry I don’t have the right expertise to be able to answer you.
Hello Sheridan
Quite by chance, I came across a print I purchased approximately 1986. It is well before any computer owned by the public could tidy it up. It is no. 11 the Mauritania on sea trials. 1907
I put a search in about John Wood collection on the back of print. Your wonderful video was the result of a bygone era.
Thanks to everyone involved, brilliant!
I dont know if this may be some help. An organisation called IAC who help people with audio visual production may know about copyright.

Thank you! I’m afraid this is not my video. I have previously worked in copyright research, so I do have some understanding of it. Sometimes, especially when the owners of a collection are private individuals, the contact details are unavailable to the public.
