1941 – a German Airman

Eyemouth lifeboat was launched on Wednesday, May 7, about 5.30, following a report that a plane had been seen to dive into the sea. The lifeboat proceeded to the spot, but found nothing but a rubber dingy, which was filled with iron rations. The sea was covered with oil, but no trace of the crew could be seen. After searching a wide area the lifeboat returned at 9.30.

The St. Abbs lifeboat, which had also put to sea, picked up one of the crew of the German ‘plane. The German, who was dead, was wearing the Iron Cross.

In connection with this incident, Mr G. Wood, Hon. Secretary of Eyemouth lifeboat, has received a letter from the Naval Officer Commanding the area, expressing his appreciation of the splendid work done by both lifeboats.
